On some old conjectures in commutative algebra
In a couple of 1973-74 papers Peskine and Szpiro proved a powerful intersection theorem. In the twenty years that followed there was a great interest in the results, several improvements, and a string of related conjectures. We will review the history of the problem, the conjectures, and the progress since. Using new methods I have recently made some advances. We will discuss the recent work and the many new questions it raises.
