Tilings in algebraic geometry

Abstract

In this rather general talk accessible to a wide audience, I will explain several recent examples of how polytopal tilings appear when describing degenerations and moduli spaces of algebraic varieties, including toric and abelian varieties, hyperplane arrangements, K3 and Enriques surfaces, and some surfaces of general type.
