Quarks, diamonds, and unexpected symmetry.

Friday 22nd, November 12:05-12:55pm, Carslaw 373.

The mathematics of quarks and gluons is intimately connected to the representation theory of the simple Lie algebra sl(3). The standard description of this representation theory involves semistandard Young tableaux and Gelfand-Tsetlin operators. Here we present a new, more computationally friendly model connected with remarkable three dimensional polytopes which we call diamonds.
