    Theory is the Captain, Practice the Soldiers

    The title of this talk is a translation of a statement by Leonardo da Vinci, as given on the title page of A.G.M. Mitchell's 1950 book on lubrication. I came across this wonderful book forty years ago and the quotation has stuck in my brain ever since. The quote accords with whatever philosophy I have about engineering education, so to support this thesis I give some personally biased examples.
