AMSI Summer School 2009

In early 2009 the University of Wollongong is hosting the seventh annual AMSI Summer School. The Summer School is designed for honours and coursework masters students in mathematical and statistical sciences. The programs consists of courses in pure mathematics and applied mathematics and statistics.

The aim of the AMSI Summer School of Mathematics is to offer honours and coursework masters students a range or courses in the mathematical sciences, some of which may not normally be available at their home institutions. The courses are also open to post graduate students from cognate areas who wish to extend their knowledge of appropriate areas of mathematics and statistics. They have proven to be of interest to students from Physics, Engineering, Biomedical Science and Commerce (Finance, Risk Management and other quantitative areas), among others.

Students will enjoy a stimulating atmosphere where opportunities for the interchange of ideas both with one another and with the lecturers. The feeling of camaraderie and the opportunity to share mathematical experiences with a larger group of students will be key features of the Summer School. Social events such as morning teas and barbecues also contribute to the experience.

Background

The Australian Mathematics Sciences Institute (AMSI) is a national consortium established through a grant from the Victorian Government and funds from thirty-one AMSI member institutions. In 2002 the Federal Government announced funding which enabled AMSI to run a program of summer courses for honours and coursework masters students in the mathematical sciences. Previous summer schools have been held in 2003 at the University of Melbourne, 2004 at the University of New South Wales, 2005 at the Australian National University, 2006 at RMIT University, 2007 at the University of Sydney and most recently 2008 at Monash University.
