A Personal Introduction to Perverse Sheaves
Part 1

The theory of perverse sheaves arose from intersection cohomology, and took flight on the wings of pure structures in characteristic p and D-modules in characteristic 0. In these two talks I will attempt to bring it back to earth with a volley of examples, mostly aimed at the characteristic p side. Part 1 will introduce characteristic functions as a helpful tool for understanding perverse sheaves, and as a means of applying them to finite groups of Lie type.
